4 Best Travel Tips for France and Beyond

Travel has been my dream since the moment I could pack a bag. Over the years, I’ve learned a few things the hard way—and a few more by watching seasoned travelers. These are my 4 best travel tips, just for you.

Tip #1: Take a Guided Tour on Day One

Begin your visit to a new city with an overview—an orientation. A guided tour or “hop-on, hop-off” bus helps you learn about a city’s highlights, locate key attractions, and find your internal compass. It’s the smartest way to make the most of your time, especially in bigger cities. You’ll get your bearings easier and pick up some fascinating facts — tidbits of history, culture, and local quirks that can deepen your appreciation for the destination.

Guided tours can also be tailored to your interests. If you’re a foodie, look for a culinary tour. If you’re crazy about history, a walking tour through the historic district might be perfect. Starting with a guide isn’t just practical—it sets the tone for the adventure ahead.

Tip #2: Wear Comfortable Shoes

This one seems obvious, but I learned the hard way that not all shoes are created equal when it comes to travel. Ill-chosen footwear can turn a dream trip into a miserable nightmare. Those stylish sandals or trendy boots might seem perfect in theory, but after a few hours of cobblestone streets or museum floors, you’ll wish you’d chosen differently.

Prioritize comfort over style—a simple choice that makes every step more enjoyable. Invest in a good pair of walking shoes or trainers before your trip and break them in before you leave. Sore feet can ruin even the best day.

Tip #3: Give Yourself Plenty of Time

I used to scoff at staying in airport hotels, thinking it was unnecessary and extravagant. That changed when I nearly missed a flight because of a delayed train from Nîmes to Charles de Gaulle. The stress of that day taught me a valuable lesson: extra time is a gift to yourself.

When I have a morning flight from CDG or another major airport, I book a budget-friendly hotel within walking distance of the terminal. It has transformed my travel experience. No rushing, no stress—just a peaceful start to my journey.

This philosophy extends beyond flights. Arrive early for trains, tours, and dinners. Use the time to relax, people-watch, or soak in your surroundings. Travel is as much about the journey as the destination, and giving yourself breathing room makes the entire experience more enjoyable.

Tip #4: Pack Light

My golden rule: don’t pack a suitcase you can’t lift onto a moving train by yourself. Trust me, I’ve learned this lesson the hard way more times than I’d like to admit. Overpacking adds physical strain and mental clutter—you’re constantly worrying about managing your bags or repacking them just right.

Traveling light saves your back, your energy, and your sanity. Pack versatile clothing that can be layered, mix and match pieces, and prioritize quality over quantity. Remember, you can always do laundry or pick up essentials along the way.

Bonus Tip: Rethink Your Carry-Ons

Traveling light doesn’t stop with suitcases. I ditched my large handbag and oversized carry-on for a small shoulder bag or backpack and a compact wheeled suitcase. This combination fits easily in overhead compartments, and my shoulders are pain-free.

A small carry-on forces you to be strategic. Only pack what you truly need: a travel-sized toiletry kit, a change of clothes, electronics, and any essentials for a comfortable flight. You’ll thank yourself every time you breeze through security or quickly stow your bag without hunting for space.

Keep Traveling!

Travel continues to teach me valuable lessons. Each journey brings its own challenges and rewards, but these tips have made my adventures more enjoyable and stress-free. Whether you’re exploring the bustling streets of Rome or the quiet countryside of Provence, remember these essentials: orient yourself, prioritize comfort, allow extra time, and pack light. Here’s to discovering the world, one trip at a time!
