Few words are better than “explosive” to describe the late-night parade in Uzès that accompanied Fête Votive 2015. After waiting for hours to see what organizers had in store for that year’s Fête Votive parade, the crowds went wild—justly so. The contrast of the loud, bright, huge, moving floats against the pale, regal, ancient buildings along the streets of Uzès was striking and exhilarating!

Dynamic Floats of 2015: A Visual Feast

The 2015 parade was one of the most spectacular float displays I’ve experienced, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. The floats were dynamic in form, color, and action, each telling a different story and captivating the audience with its creativity.

History of the Procession of Pégoulade

The Procession of Pégoulade has deep roots in the tradition of nighttime parades with torches, which date back centuries in Provence. The word “Pégoulade” comes from the Provençal word “pegoul,” meaning torch. This tradition was originally a simpler affair, with townspeople carrying torches to celebrate various occasions, including the end of the harvest, and to honor local saints.

The Procession of Pégoulade in Uzès began in the early 20th century. Initially, it was a modest event with townspeople carrying torches through the streets to celebrate the end of the harvest and honor Saint Theodoret. Over the years, it evolved into a grand spectacle with elaborate floats, dazzling lights, and vibrant performances.

Global Parades Similar to the Procession of Pégoulade

While the Procession of Pégoulade is unique to Uzès, similar nighttime parades can be found around the world. Italy’s Carnevale di Venezia, for example, features grand processions with elaborate masks and costumes. This event, held in Venice, is famous for its opulence and historical significance, drawing visitors from around the globe.

In Spain, Las Fallas in Valencia is renowned for its towering papier-mâché figures paraded through the streets before being set ablaze. This fiery celebration is a blend of art and tradition, celebrating Saint Joseph and showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of the local community.

Closer to home, the Fête des Lumières in Lyon, France, is another spectacular nighttime event. Although not a parade, this festival transforms the city with stunning light displays and installations, celebrating the city’s history and its connection to the Virgin Mary.
