Uzes: A French Artist Village

Uzès is a French artist village that reminds me of a place where Van Gogh, Matisse, and Monet would have liked to hang out. The beauty of the town and surroundings could inspire anyone with an inkling of talent to pick up a brush, a pen, or a musical instrument.

Local artists on display

Today, the town is filled with artists of all types. One of my favorite pastimes is exploring the expositions sponsored by local artists. Earlier posts have shown examples.

Last week, the exposition of Guelpa, Lewandrowski, Memin, and Vieville in the Galerie La Verriere caught my attention. Francois Lewandrowski and I met at another art gathering, and I was anxious to see his work. When I stopped by the Galerie, three of the artists were “in residence.”

Here are examples of their work and notes about the artists.

Denis Gulpa works primarily with stone.  His whimsical sculptures are created in classic sizes, adding a comical twist to his art.

Jean Marie Memin chooses pen and ink to illustrate people and their “traits.”  In addition to his artwork, Memin’s “pochette signet” collection was on display — the first of its type I’ve seen. Each porchette signet contains a series of small drawings put together with a themeFrench Artist Village

Francois Lewandrowski expresses himself with contemporary and abstract creations in oil, pastels, and crayons. His choices of canvas, cardboard, and paper give him the freedom to express his “futuristic” views of life and the world.

The exhibition runs until September 15. Stop by if you are in or around Uzes. Not only is the visit worth the time to enjoy the artwork, but the Galerie La Verriere itself is an amazing place to see and to wander through the grounds.
