Heaven on Earth – My First Arrival in Uzès

OMG! This place is better than I remembered.

Uzès is heaven on earth. My First Arrival in Uzès

A train ride from Barcelona marked the start of my arrival in Uzès. After a night of no AC in my hotel in Barcelona and a computer that wouldn’t cooperate, I wasn’t taking any chances. I called a cab to the train station and let someone else worry about it.

The train ride wasn’t exactly what I hoped for. The windows were so dirty I couldn’t see much of the countryside, and forget about taking photos. But racing along at 250 km/hr made up for it. By just past noon, I was in Nîmes.

Before I left the States, I had messaged a friend I met in France in 2011. I wasn’t sure he’d answer, but he did, and to my surprise, he offered to meet me. He was waiting at the station. We had a “welcome back” lunch, caught up on two years, and then he drove me to Uzès.

And then—I was here again.

Here’s my home away from home. Ain’t it great?

Arrival in Uzès

Rue St. Roman

My apartment was on Rue St. Roman. A narrow cobblestone street, lined with tall houses, shutters thrown open, and stone walls that looked like they’d been standing forever. Quiet, private, just the kind of street I wanted.

Yes, Uzès is heaven on earth!

The Apartment

I had only seen the apartment on Airbnb, so I was curious. By the time I was dropped off, I was tired, ready to settle in, and more than a little nervous about what I’d find.

It turned out to be quirky but perfect. Four stories, one room per floor. The kitchen was on the bottom. The next level—the French call it the “first floor”—was the living room. Above that, the bedroom and bath, with the shower right in the bedroom. On the top was a TV/relaxation room with a sliding glass door overlooking the street. Along one wall was a counter stacked with small appliances: coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven. Not what I’m used to, but it worked.

The apartment belonged to a young Dutchman who had been extremely helpful while I was planning this trip. It was tucked into the corner of a private street, out of the way, but just steps from everything.

Beginning the Adventure

After unpacking, I didn’t do much else. I was too tired to explore, but just being in Uzès again was enough. I sat for a while in the little apartment, thinking about tomorrow. That’s when I’d head out, walk the streets, and see it all again.

For now, I was here. On Rue St. Roman. My first night in Uzès. The fountain was waiting in the square, and the town was outside my door.

The beginning of the adventure.

Truly, Uzès is heaven on earth.
