Scenic Drives Along the Côte d’Azur: Exploring Route des Crêtes

Trying to relive my seven-day scenic drive along the Côte d’Azur, it’s challenging to get through the first day. There are so many photos and memories to share. Starting in the morning from Uzès and heading to the Route des Crêtes, a photo op awaited at every turn.

When my friend Heidi and I began our week-long drive along and above the Côte d’Azur, we planned to stop in Cassis, then drive into the hills and explore the Route des Crêtes. Little did we know that the adventure would lead us to some of the most stunning landscapes and skyscapes we had ever seen—from the sparkling waters of the sea to the rugged mountains of Provence.

When the car began climbing the Route des Crêtes, it became clear that this was not just a scenic drive but a gateway to a region we had never imagined—the Forêt Domaniale de l’Esterel. The Route des Crêtes winds through red cliffs and spectacular panoramas of the Mediterranean coastline, offering a new perspective on the beauty of southern France.

Timing our drive to catch the sunset was ideal, and I highly recommend it. The light softens as the day winds down, casting a golden glow over the cliffs and the sea below. There’s something almost magical about watching the sun dip into the horizon from this vantage point.

Along the Côte d’Azur Exploring Route des Crêtes

As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly spectacular. The Route des Crêtes isn’t just about the views—it’s also about the experience of driving it. The road is narrow and winding, with sharp hairpin turns and steep grades that test your skills as a driver. There were moments when it felt like the road was clinging to the cliff’s edge. It’s a drive that demands your full attention but rewards you with some of the most exhilarating views you’ll ever see.

Yet, for all its challenges, the drive is also incredibly peaceful, offering a unique way to experience the rugged beauty of Provence.

Sights Along the Route des Crêtes Drive

The Route des Crêtes is filled with natural wonders and steeped in history. During World War II, this road played a crucial role in defending the region, offering an unobstructed view to monitor naval activity in the Mediterranean. Hiding among the cliffs provided a natural defense; reportedly, there are military bunkers and remnants of military installations. The German forces and the French Resistance used the road itself. As we drove along, I couldn’t help but think about the rocks and the stories they could tell.

Sunset Spots along the Route des Crêtes

As the day progressed, we discovered one of the most spectacular views of the Route des Crêtes. From the road, panoramic views of the towns and sea below were visible. We pulled over at one of the viewpoints to watch the sunset. It was a moment I won’t soon forget.

Reflecting the setting sun’s light, the red cliffs seemed to glow with supernatural beauty. The sky turned orange and pink as it lay on the calm waters below. It was a magical moment—the perfect way to end a perfectly wonderful day.
